General Dynamics

Single pane of glass provides General Dynamics with visibility, analytics and control of their data centre.

General Dynamics is a global aerospace and defence company. From Gulfstream business jets to submarines to wheeled combat vehicles to communications systems, people around the world depend on their products and services for their safety and security.

The challenge

General Dynamics Land Systems was awarded a MoD contract to build 400 tanks in a renovated site in Merthyr Tydfil. The facility was fitted out with production assembly lines, office space for 250 staff and a new Data Centre to begin production by September 2017.

Several energy management solutions were evaluated to provide real time monitoring of power and cooling in the new Data Centre before General Dynamics chose SMARTset. The requirement demanded an easy to use tool that could provide a single pane of glass of critical conditions in the data centre with real time thermal maps and a highly configurable dashboard viewable locally and remotely.

The solution

SMARTset was installed and configured in the Data Centre in under 3 days.

The dashboard and thermal maps provide the management team with a simple view of their data centre, allowing them to monitor remotely in real time and configure alarms based on variable conditions. This means that alerts are only generated when a number of conditions are met, reducing the number of false alarms and ensuring that the team is able to pre-empt failures before they become critical.

The result

“SMARTset is by far the best software tool we have seen for managing critical infrastructure. It’s such a flexible tool and although we only use a fraction of its capability we have already benefited from its ability to display complex conditions in a simple easy to configure dashboard.”
