Our recent survey of the challenges faced by those responsible for physical infrastructure and cabling produced some interesting results. Top of the list of challenges was tracing cable routes, with producing business reports and documentation also listed as a major hassle for IT infrastructure managers. When the focus was on the challenges faced by the business it was Asset and Capacity management and planning that featured most prominently. So why are only 39% of respondents considering investing in a software solution to meet these challenges?
When referring to Cable Management Software we don’t mean a full blown intelligent patching system; hardware and implementation costs of such solutions are usually prohibitive. In essence a Cable Management Software Solution is a big data base with an easy to use GUI in which you build a one to one model of your infrastructure. Such systems can include features found in Data Centre (DCIM), Network Monitoring and ITSM software but their primary feature is the detailed mapping of copper and fibre connections. Additional benefits can be realised by integrating such systems into your ITIL compliance processes but even as standalone solutions they can deliver tangible gains, speeding up and improving the accuracy of; Asset and Capacity reports, cable tracing and moves and changes processes.
Implemented correctly good examples of this type of software resolve the issues the respondents to our survey identified. So why has the uptake of such solutions been so slow? This is partly because the licences are perceived as very expensive, which in some cases is a genuine issue but often a return on investment can be demonstrated. More frequently the obstacle is that the task of inputting the data and building the model is perceived as outweighing the benefit of the tool. The result is that all too often cabling infrastructures continues to be documented badly. Inefficient processes continue to waste time and mistakes are made because managers don’t have the right tools to do the job. At AIT we have developed a number of web processes, and easy to use services, that take away the hassle of implementing and updating Cable Management Software. This enables us to deliver all the benefits offered by these tools without the dependencies on maintaining data integrity in the model. Learn more here
