AIT install point-to-point solution after company experiences rapid expansion and needs a fast fix.

A global player in the global oil & gas industry, Wood Group Mustang has built a solid reputation for engineering design, project management, and construction management services. Today, Mustang has over 350 clients and employs 7,700 employees worldwide. With over 11,000 projects completed from oil and gas platforms to pipelines and process plants, Wood Group Mustang thrives on providing innovative solutions that are fit-for-purpose, cost-effective and on-time.

Challenge.

When Wood Group Mustang’s Woking office in the UK needed more space due to rapid expansion of its project workload, a new building was leased to accommodate 300 employees over five floors. The two buildings, 225m apart, needed to be quickly linked to create a single local area network for voice and data. The link had to be very resilient to ensure their VoIP telephony didn’t lose packets with enough bandwidth for applications such as 3D CAD software.

“We looked at using a leased line from various suppliers but we would have had to wait at least 2 months for a connection and we needed a practical solution faster than any leased line provider could deliver.” said Simon Ranson, IT Manager for the Woking office.

“We looked at using a leased line from various suppliers but we would have had to wait at least 2 months for a connection and we needed a practical solution faster than any leased line provider could deliver”, said Simon Ranson, IT Manager for the Woking office.

  • Quality of Service for the VoIP telephony, eliminating delays and dropped packets to avoid noise and echo in the call.
  • High bandwidth and resilience for the advanced 3D CAD software to prevent any loss of connection that would result in locked out users.

To meet the resilience and bandwidth requirement, AIT bonded two Gigabit links together to form a single 2 Gbps Ethernet channel between the two buildings delivering a primary and backup link. The links were installed on the roof of the lower building and inside the window of the taller building providing a good line of sight between them.

Solution.

Result.

“The point-to-point link was installed and running within two weeks of placing the order and has been running for five years of continuous operation, keeping staff connected and working” continued Simon.

As part of a recent maintenance upgrade, AIT replaced one of the links with the latest Millimetre Wave point-to-point link from Sub10 Systems

“The wireless connection between two buildings continues to operate very reliably with an average of around 700Mbps of data flowing across the 2Gbps link throughout the day” Concluded Simon.

Wood Group Mustang is growing again and will be taking an additional 6th floor in the satellite building. It plans to continue to use the wireless point-to-point links between the buildings for its Ethernet connectivity.
