Hampshire County Council

Data centre team request AIT help to improve their energy and environmental monitoring as a first step to improving data centre efficiency and reducing energy consumption.

Hampshire is the largest county in South East England with a population of 1.76 million people. Hampshire County Council serves 1.3 million of these residents (excluding Southampton and Portsmouth) and has its headquarters building based in Winchester, together with its data centre.

The Council has an ambitious five year target to reduce carbon emissions by 20% by 2016 and has already saved 23,00 tonnes of carbon, around 17% of that total, by multiple energy efficiency measures across all parts of the Council including installing LED street lighting and refurbishing council buildings.

Challenge.

To meet energy efficiency targets in the Carbon Reduction Commitment programme the data centre team wanted to improve their energy and environmental monitoring as a first step to improving data centre efficiency and reducing energy consumption. The data centre, typical of local authorities, has around 100 server racks with a variety of servers and storage devices supporting the work of the Council.

Additional monitoring of server inlet and exhaust temperature and humidity was required along with rack level monitoring of power consumption and enterprise class energy management software to make use of the data collected. The Council had previously invested in Unite Hawkeye rack monitored PDUs and wanted to upgrade this to protect their investment in hardware.

AIT proposed their AIT PIMs solution using hardware and software components to collect temperature, humidity and other environmental and security sensor readings from the racks. Power consumption data was collected from the existing Unite PDUs and integrated into AIT PIMs enterprise energy management software to present all the data in an easy to user web browser interface with dashboards, thermal maps, ASHRAE Cooling charts, floor plan and rack views and reporting.

This provided the Council with a single ‘pane-of-glass’ to view, report and trend the real time monitoring data of power and environmental conditions without the cost and disruption of replacing the existing rack PDUs.

Solution.

Result.

AIT PIMs was installed in December 2014. The Hampshire County Council data centre team are now using the monitoring system to optimise cooling within the data centre, raise overall temperatures in-line with ASHRAE guidelines, reduce cooling costs, shrink their carbon footprint and lower their electricity costs.
