AIT Partnership Group enables Reading based Calcot Infant School and Nursery to provide interactive learning at their school with installation and support of a new Wireless LAN network.

A larger-than-average infant school, Calcot Infant School & Nursery is in a federation with the junior school on the same spacious nine acre site. A community school with an age range of between 3 and 7, Calcot strives to offer a broad and balanced curriculum and strong learning culture to its 229 children. They turned to AIT to install, support and maintain their wireless LAN network.

Challenge.

Calcot Infant School & Nursery required a managed wireless network with coverage across the whole site. Drivers for the managed WLAN included enabling student devices and the ability to have guest access for visitors to the site.

To help identify the right solution and establish the key technical criteria for the school AIT used a three step process:

  1. Information gathering– Floor plans for the site were obtained from the school.
  2. Site survey – AIT wireless engineers surveyed the site to estimate signal loss through the walls and assess other obstacles that would cause signal problems.
  3. Planning – AIT used their extensive experience and software planning tools to design the wireless network and determine the best location to install wireless access points (APs) for optimal coverage throughout the school.

AIT recommended a wireless network of 15 access points with a controller-less wireless architecture that was managed via the cloud for flexibility and robustness. The Aerohive solution consisted of 15 access points, a 24way Ethernet switch with power over Ethernet (PoE) incorporated within the switch to power the access points throughout the site.

The on-line management system, called Hive Manager, provides easy administration of the network via a web browser. This allows them to monitor the network and make changes from any location. The system administrator sets up differing access rights and resource access for staff and pupils as needed using PPSK’s (private pre-shared keys), which are then automatically downloaded to the access points themselves providing autonomous local control.

Solution.

Result.

AIT installed the new system over the summer holidays ready for the autumn term. The new wireless network allows pupils to access iPads and other mobile devices anywhere in the school . After initially setting up and configuring the network AIT now provides telephone support with the backup of a next business day on-site repair service in case any problems do occur.

IT Manager Donna Rothwell is happy with the school’s new wireless network.
