Cloud watching – why the future of CCTV is in the Cloud

The Digital Revolution is transforming every area of our society and disrupting businesses at an increasing pace. The old ways of doing things, and many of the newer ways of doing things, are being surpassed by the new wave of technology that leverages the massive improvement in data analysis made possible by Cloud Computing and AI. One area ripe for disruption is CCTV.

Managing a large estate of CCTV cameras is a real headache and the local hardware required to monitor store and analyseCCTV footage is expensive to maintain. Although the market was digitally disrupted in the late 1990’s with IP cameras, this is about to be repeated by a move to Cloud managed CCTV systems.

A similar evolution occurred in enterprise WLAN a few years ago when innovative companies like Aerohive and Meraki redesigned the Access Point to take advantage of the Cloud and remove the dependence on local hardware. They disrupted market leaders like Cisco and HP/Aruba by eliminating local controllers and putting the intelligence in the AP itself, using a Cloud platform to add management features. They were so successful that Cisco bought Meraki and Extreme bought Aerohive.  Now innovative companies like Verkada, are doing something similar for the CCTV market. By using a Solid State Drive on the camera to store the video, and Cloud software to manage and monitor, they only need to stream video when detailed HD viewing is required, the majority of the time it is just uploading a few kilobytes of SD snapshots to allow monitoring and intelligent search. As most CCTV records nothing of interest for most of the time the bandwidth use of these systems is very low.

There are many advantages of using a Cloud CCTV solution like this;

  • Eliminate the NVR/DVR as single point of failure and security risk
  • Lower hardware support costs
  • Push updates and security patches automatically to each camera
  • Alert on tampering or camera malfunction
  • Use the power of Cloud based analytics such as: index and activity based search, ANPR, facial recognition
  • Easy sharing of cameras across all platforms and mobile devices and between agencies
  • Simplifies network and security configuration with no need for complex VPNs
  • Fully encrypted data at rest and in transit
  • Centralisedremote-access command that is scalable to any number of locations

Of course there are some disadvantages. The initial cost of the camera is high but the ROI is fast due to lower support costs. If the camera is stolen the HD footage is lost but if it is configured to upload on activity the important footage is saved.
