Don’t be a frog, jump before you boil!
How Digital Transformation is set to disrupt the analogue world of BMS and how to survive it!
June 26, 2019 in
For the past 50 years a Digital Revolution has been transforming our society. Like the previous major technology revolutions, that disrupted Agricultural and Industrial activity, this transformation started slowly and is now picking up pace as it disrupts old ways of doing things. It has been so slow that most of us didn’t realise what was happening until recently. Like frogs dropped into tepid water we have acclimatised as the temperature slowly rises and many will not become aware before it is too late and we reach the boiling point of rapid social, political and economic change. To survive we need to become aware of the changes and act fast. Digital Transformation in all its forms will affect every job, even those in the centuries old restrictive practises of the educated middle class like law, accountancy and medicine. Faster computer processing, bigger databases, machine Learning, AI and other transformative technologies will increasingly replace and automate human intellectual activity. Even in conservative and risk adverse sectors, like Mechanical and Electrical engineering and Building Management Systems, these changes will disrupt markets and the people working in them. The next wave of Digital Transformation is coming and you better be ready. So what do you need to do to be one of the survivors?
Moving from legacy proprietary systems that control HVAC and electrical and building systems to browser based interfaces and open standards digital systems can be daunting but the benefits are tangible. Lower support costs and easier access to the energy data required to make savings are 2 of the immediate tangible benefits. The greater flexibility and increased control that a digital system, provides over a proprietary BMS can solve a lot of the frustrations experienced by Energy Managers. If you are an Energy Manager ask yourself how many times you have wanted to make some changes but have been told by your facilities manager that you can’t because you need to re-programme your proprietary controllers or that you can’t get the report you need without re-programming your BMS. If you are a BMS installer you may want to provide your clients with a more flexible system, knowing that if you don’t a competitor will! You know the change is coming but may not want to be an early adopter. So what do you do?
At AIT we have been developing an integrated Digital BeMs (Building and Energy Management System) to address some of these requirements. It won’t solve all your BMS frustrations but it will help you along the journey to a Digitally Transformed BMS. Our unique mix of IT and M&E skills with integrated SMARTset software and SMARTbox hardware can help you make the transition.
