Hot/Cold Aisle Containment controls temperature and energy costs

Optimising air flow in your data centre with the use of containment has several key benefits, including reducing energy costs and improving efficiency. Containment solutions separate hot from cold aisles by the use sheet metal walls, bespoke ceilings and doors. Designing and installing hot aisle or cold aisle containment however requires a lot more than just sheet metal knowledge; you will also need to rebalance air flows and air conditioning systems to reap the benefits of containment.

We set up AIT Partnership Group Ltd in 2002 because we thought we could provide a better level of service than what was available from the company we worked for at the time and their competitors. Thankfully you agreed and we have grown steadily since 2002. Today we deliver trusted advice to hundreds of enterprises in the public and private sector, providing services and solutions across our 3 divisions; Data Centre, Wireless & Networking, and Physical Infrastructure Management. AIT has helped thousands of organisations realise the benefit of technological innovation. We have achieved this because we are passionate about what we do, using technology to make it easier for you to manage your Data Centre, Wireless Networks and Physical Infrastructure, in turn reducing your risk and saving both money and time.

About AIT Partnership Group

Hot vs Cold Aisle Containment

The choice of hot aisle containment or cold aisle containment is usually decided by the layout of a data centre. Cold aisle containment is most commonly used where cold air is fed to the server racks using an under-floor plenum (raised floor). Containment is used to keep the cold air to the inlet side of the racks, while the exhaust side is left open allowing the warm air to return to the HVAC units for cooling.

In hot aisle containment the exhaust air is usually funnelled into return air ducting, returning the warm air to the HVACs. Since the majority of data centres use raised floors to supply cold air around the room, cold air containment is commonly used, but hot aisle containment is considered where an under-floor plenum doesn’t exist or where there is already an existing hot air return system of some sort. Hot aisle containment systems use ceiling voids or ducting to efficiently return the warm air from the hot aisle to the HVACs.

Bespoke Hot/Cold Aisle Containment Solutions

Every server room is unique, requiring a bespoke solution. Whether you have an odd shaped room, cabinets of differing height in the same aisle, need to incorporate fire suppression or have unusual air flow needs such as equipment with side-to-side or back-to-front air flow, AIT has the breadth and depth of experience to help.

Improve Cooling Efficiency

Separating the hot and cold aisles with a containment solution stops hot air recirculating within the data centre and mixing with the cold inlet air. Such recirculation reduces overall cooling efficiency and helps prevent in rack hot spots developing.

Reduce Energy Costs

Ensuring hot and cold air separation enables high-volume air conditioning (HVAC) systems to work more efficiently, reducing power consumption and energy costs. A well designed containment system allows higher temperature set points by directing cooler air more directly to the server inlets.

Extend Equipment Life

Properly designed hot/cold aisle containment allows equipment to be kept at optimal temperatures, eliminating hot spots and extending the operational life of your IT equipment.

Increase Security

Doors included in the hot/cold aisle containment system may include manual or electronic security locks to ensure only authorised staff can access the containment zone.

Talk to AIT, the Containment Experts

Containment is not simply a matter of throwing up panels, it has to be properly planned. Because you are altering the air flow/cooling characteristics of the data centre you may also need to modify the air conditioning equipment, under floor/ceiling voids, racks and other in room equipment to ensure air goes to where it is needed. You may also want to monitor environmental conditions and use these to control your air conditioning more efficiency.

AIT has a long track record of data centre infrastructure and has installed many different cold aisle containment systems. Case studies include the University of Nottingham and Bedford Borough Council. These examples show how AIT can design bespoke hot/cold containment solution to suit your exact needs and retrofit it into your live data centre environment.

AIT has the experience to quickly design, supply and fit your hot/cold aisle containment allowing you to raise your tempterature set points and reduce energy costs, while at the same time removing rack hot spots, improving equipment life and increasing the lifetime of your data centre by allowing increased density of server equipment in the fixed space.
